Elizabethtown offers a diverse and well-maintained parks and recreation system that provides residents and visitors with ample opportunities for outdoor activities, relaxation and community gatherings. From aquatic fun to scenic nature trails, the city’s parks serve as a vital hub for fitness, play, and remembrance.
One of the standout features of Elizabethtown’s park system is the American Legion Park. This popular destination is home to multiple recreational facilities, making it an excellent spot for individuals and families alike.
It boasts a nine-hole Par-3 golf course, perfect for beginners and experienced golfers looking for a quick round. Additionally, the park features 12 newly constructed pickle ball courts, allowing enthusiasts to engage in friendly matches, brush up on their skills or learn a new sport.
A major highlight of American Legion Park is the American Legion Water Park, which offers an exciting array of attractions. Visitors can enjoy two large water slides, a rock climbing wall, a lazy river, a vortex, a kids’ play structure, a mommy deck and a separate splash pad for the little ones. This seasonal water park, open approximately from May through September, is a favorite summer destination for families looking to beat the heat.
For those looking for a more traditional playground experience, the Funtopia Community Playground has been completely renovated to ensure accessibility for all individuals. Adjacent to the playground, a large pavilion is available on a first-come, first-served basis, making it a popular spot for organizations and private parties. Its location to both Funtopia and the Aquatic Park makes it a popular gathering space.
For those who appreciate a quieter, more scenic setting, the Elizabethtown Nature Park provides 104 acres of rolling former pasture land. With Freeman Creek gently flowing through the park, visitors can enjoy a peaceful retreat into nature.
A walking trail connects to the larger Freeman Lake Park trail system, offering an excellent opportunity for hiking, jogging or leisurely strolls. Elizabethtown was designated as Kentucky’s first Urban Trail Town with well maintained trails and public paths to connect the community to nature. There are approximately 40 miles of trails throughout the trail network in the city.
One unique feature of the Nature Park is the tunnel under Ring Road, which links it to the north end of Freeman Lake Park. This connection allows visitors to explore even more green space and enhances accessibility to both areas.
Additionally, the Nature Park holds significant historical and cultural importance. It is home to the Hardin County Veterans Tribute and the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall, serving as a solemn reminder of those who have served and sacrificed. These memorials provide a reflective space for visitors to pay their respects and learn about the region’s rich military heritage.
The Elizabethtown Parks & Recreation Department operates 10 strategically placed playgrounds throughout the city, ensuring that all residents have access to a safe and fun play environment. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, these playgrounds provide free play spaces that promote physical activity and social interaction for children of all ages.
Funtopia, located at American Legion Park, is a 95% ADA accessible to accommodate all of our littlest citizens. The Oasis, located at Freeman Lake, is ADA accessible as well and has a picturesque setting of Freeman Lake in as the background.
Additionally, the Arboretum and Botanical Garden at Pritchard Community Center is home to hundreds of plants with more than 90 beds, to include 15 perennial flower beds and two huge butterfly gardens. The garden’s path is a half mile in distance that runs along Valley Creek. It is a perfect greenspace destination in the heart of downtown Elizabethtown.
A city dedicated to recreation, Elizabethtown’s parks and recreation facilities demonstrate the city’s commitment to providing inclusive and engaging outdoor spaces. Whether you’re looking for a water-filled adventure, a scenic nature retreat or a place for your children to play, Elizabethtown’s park system has something for everyone. With a blend of recreational, historical and natural elements, these parks contribute to the high quality of life enjoyed by all.
